American Horror Story Textual Analysis 1

Season 1 Episode 1

This is a wide shot at a high angle. The camera pans around it, creating a point-of-view experience for the viewer, immersing them in the scene. Despite the tree being natural, the colours are bleak, creating atmosphere.

This is a wide shot and the camera movement dollies in, so the viewer can see the entire house.  It is at an high angle, so the viewer feels intimidated by the house. It also puts it at the centre of attention, instead of the little girl, showing the house is of more importance. It is derelict and overgrown,  which shows it is in decay and also makes it more intimidating/scary for the viewer. The colours are quite bleak, in contrast to the girl's clothes, which yet again shows that the house is in decay and creates an air of horror.

This is an extreme close-up that is designed to shock the viewer. It also confirms that the house is dangerous. The camera pans around it, sustaining the shock value and increasing the tension.
