Pretty Little Liars Textual Analysis

Season 1 Episode 1

The opening shot is an establishing shot of a rural building. This shows that the setting is isolated. The lighting is low-key and the weather is turbulent, connoting that trouble is ahead.

Here, all four of the girls can be seen clearly, which suggests that they are all important characters. Their faces are at an equal level, signifying that they have an equal amount of power in their group. They are standing very close to each other, showing that they have a close relationship. This scene is a stereotypical portrayal of teenage girls, as they are all scared.

The camera remains focused on the characters, so the audience does not know the cause of the disturbance. This immerses the audience, and shows that they are going to be involved in these characters' storylines.
