This is selective focus of a close-up, showing the audience that this character is important. There is a focus on the man's bald spot, telling the audience he is middle-aged. The lighting is low-key which, coupled with the old-fashioned music,gives the scene a simplistic, archaic feel to it. This is a juxtaposition to the setting of the scene: a bakery set in modern-day America. This could signify that the man's life is simplistic, or that he feels like an outcast.
The character is preparing a food item, which is not an activity typically done by male characters. This could show that he is not a traditionally masculine man, and therefore feels excluded from other men. The character is cut off from other characters who are out of focus. This solidifies his status as an outcast.
The music stops when the man enters his home, which could show that he is an introvert and feels more comfortable in his own home. The lighting also changes to chiaroscuro. The camera is positioned far away from the man to make the viewer feel as if they are trespassing on his private life.
Invitational music rises when the man goes for this box. This raises the tension and adds suspense to the atmosphere. The item the man is looking for is hidden underneath family photos. This shows that the item is personal to him, and that it is secretive, as it needs to be hidden.
The lighting term used on the first scene is incorrect but would agree to that term being used in house, particularly when part of his face is in darkness.
